Bringing a gray, weathered deck back to life

Untreated wood turns gray from UV exposure and mildew. It looks bad but usually the wood itself is fine underneath. Here's the process to bring it back.

Standard deck wash with a cleaning solution. Kills mildew, lifts dirt, exposes the actual wood color underneath. After this step you'll see the wood is still gray — that's the UV-damaged layer.

This is the step most DIY jobs skip. A wood brightener is a mild acid-based solution (oxalic acid usually) that:

• Neutralizes the pH raised by the cleaning solution
• Removes UV-oxidized wood cells
• Reopens the wood grain to accept stain
• Restores the original warm color

Apply, let it dwell 5–15 minutes, rinse. The transformation on cedar and pressure-treated pine is dramatic.

72 hours of dry weather. Sand any raised grain. Now you're ready to stain.

Fresh-brightened wood accepts stain evenly. You'll use less product and get better coverage than trying to stain a weathered deck.
